Summer Camping Trip

Rex took Evan (7) and Mason (5) Uncle Bryce took all of his boys Darren (12), Scott (7), and Russell (4), Uncle David took Zac (12) and Logan (7). The younger boys not yet potty-trained, stayed home. They had quite the adventure. The trip to the campsite in central Nevada took the group right past the infamous Area 51. They all stopped in Rachel Nevada at the Ale-Inn and had Alien Burgers. The food wasn’t great but it was fun to look at all the alien paraphernalia.

They continued their trip and were almost to their campsite when they came across a glider and pilot stranded on the side of the dirt road in the middle of nowhere. They asked if he needed help. He said he lost lift and had to make an unscheduled landing on the dirt road. He had someone coming from Tonopah with his trailer but said he could use some extra muscle to get it loaded. They decided to wait and give him a hand. While they waited, the boys got to see and hear first-hand how gliders work and also passed the time taking turns shooting Darren's sling shot. After loading the glider it was a short trip to the campsite “Pine Creek Campgrounds.” The campgrounds were just awesome – with a good-sized creek running right next to the campsite and good level places to pitch the tents. The entire site was also shaded all day with mature oak, pine, and aspen trees. The boys had fun exploring the creek and surrounding area – Darren had great success fishing in the creek and caught 4 fish. They divided up the cooking assignments – and had good food the entire trip, with fish one morning for breakfast. They spent the night sleeping next to the roaring river.

The next day the group took a hike along a near-by trail that led to the peak of Mt. Jefferson (the 3rd highest peak in Nevada). With such small boys on the trip they didn’t attempt to go that far – but had fun following the trail alongside the creek for a mile or so. At one point they came to a point in the trail where they had to build a bridge to cross the creek. Rex fell in a couple of times during the construction of the bridge – but they were eventually successful in getting everyone across. Evan, Scott, Logan, Rex, Bryce and David hiked up a small hill near camp to get a view of the surrounding valley. They took one of the picture you see below – and Uncle David Hansen after seeing the photo dubbed Logan “The Crooked Man”, Evan “Rocky” and Scott “Dennis the Menace” The rest of the day was spent hanging around camp, fishing, playing horseshoes, reading etc. It was great relaxing fun. The next day they broke camp and drove to nearby Belmont. Before arriving in Belmont – they stopped at an interesting hill composed of different sized volcanic boulders. They decided to climb to the top. Scott was a little mountain goat and reached the top in no time at all. The rest also made it up but it took a bit more time to figure out a good route through the boulders and cliffs. A short drive later they came across a large bricked smoke stack that was fun to explore and climb inside. The group then continued on to the town of Belmont – which at one point in its history was a booming mine town and the county seat. The town has only 6 permanent residents – and they were lucky that one of these residents graciously offered to open up the courthouse and show them the inside. The boys also had fun pretending to be prisoners in the old jail cells behind the courthouse. They then looked around the rest of the ruins in the small town before continuing on their trip across the mountains to Manhattan. The town of Manhattan didn’t have much to see other than an old water filled quarry – but at least they could tell all their friends that they had taken a trip to Manhattan this summer. All in all a great trip with terrific memories made.
